Abstract

“Focus Sustainability” piece on the online Sustainability Benchmarking Tool that was created by the Manomet Center for Conservation Science, under the direction of Andy Whitman, in partnership with the nonprofit Maine Businesses for Sustainability. Three businesses share what they learned from the survey: Matt Idexx says that the tool not only validated progress the company had already made, but helped them prioritize efforts to improve the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. For Tim Downing of Duratherm Window Corp. in Vassalboro, a company that had already made sustainability a priority, the tool provided him with a deeper understanding of the ways sustainability can be incorporated into day-to-day practices. And Paul Harrison of Little Dog Coffee Shop in Brunswick says the tool highlighted small changes he could make that would also help cut costs.
