Abstract

The Madison-based company Backyard Farms, which produces hydroponic tomatoes year-round, suffered from two troubled crops in the space of six months and was forced to furlough its 200 workers. By late December, six months later, it had rehired all of its employees and had produced a healthy crop. Tim Cunniff, the company’s executive vice president of sales, explains the initial whitefly infestation, the subsequent quality control issue, and the tough decisions the management team had to make, and discusses the support its customers showed the company.
