Abstract

“Focus Education/Workforce” piece on disillusionment with higher education. Higher education can dramatically increase lifetime earnings, yet the cost of obtaining a degree has many questioning the value of higher education. Phil Trostel’s report for the Maine Development Foundation titled “The Fiscal Return on Higher Education in Maine,” reinforces the correlation between higher education and higher earnings, and points to other benefits as well, such as better health, as well as desirable public outcomes such as reduction in crime and increased philanthropy.
