Abstract

A look at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast and how the company has played a key role in the revitalization of the town’s waterfront. The shipyard employs 110 workers who build or refit boats. It is now one of the largest yacht facilities on the East Coast. The company’s founding partners include four well-known Maine boatbuilders: Taylor Allen of Rockport Marine Inc.; Steve White of Brooklin Boat Yard; JB Turner, the former president of the Lyman-Morse Shipyard; and Kenneth Priest II, CEO of Kenway Corp. Although each of these partners has his own company to manage, they don’t feel that their involvement with Front Street compromises their own businesses, but rather that the competition is healthy and that there are good opportunities to collaborate.
