Abstract

While the Portland Museum of Art's metrics are strong, the director, Mark Bessire, knows the museum staff cannot be complacent in imagining its future. Influenced by Michael Lewis' book, "Moneyball," he believes the museum must focus on remaining relevant in a small market and how to identify value to compete over its scale. As a result, the museum has embarked many new initiatives such as digitizing much of its collection, redesigning the library to include an art study room, and co-locating media according to the time periods they were produced.
