Abstract

An article on renovation projects in Portland describes plans for the redesign of the Portland Public Library, with work to begin in 2005. Architect John Turk, who says he has wanted to redesign the library since he came to Portland in 1986, initiated a partnership with Will Bruder, designer of the masterpiece Phoenix (AZ) Central Library. Their new design will enclose and utilize space in the awkward entryway, feature active areas, bathrooms, and a cafe in the front of the library and visually connect the floors of the library with a light tunnel and a dramatic circular staircase.
