Abstract

Obituary of Charles F. Eastman, 59, of Portland, who died Aug. 17, 1880. Mr. Eastman, a black man, was self-educated and accumulated a large library. He was interested in natural history, and, as a taxidermist, had a museum of rare birds and small animals in his home on Anderson Street. He was a member of the Abyssinian Church and helped sustain it with his liberal giving. He was one of the regular "conductors" on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves. He leaves a wife and six children.
