Abstract

More than 50 people attended a meeting on Sept. 16 at the Peaks Island Community Center to discuss the future of the Portland Public Library system, in the wake of severe budget cuts and the threat of future reductions in services. Island Councilor Rob Tiffany said that city councilors seemed surprised at what their budget cuts did to the library last year. Board member Peter Merrill said that outlying towns believe the system has too many branches and see no reason to help fund it. A board member of the West End Neighborhood Association objected to the idea that the answer to budget cuts should be branch closures. With details on the meeting.
