Abstract

Maine Public Television and Maine Public Radio are urging supporters to pass a $9.4 million bond that would keep the stations alive. But the appearance of the ads has raised questions about the ethics of advocating a point of view over airwaves that have been paid for with individual donations and tax dollars. Rob Gardiner, president of Maine Public Broadcasting (MPB), says the federal government has ordered all television stations to make the expensive switch to digital broadcasting by 2002, and for MPB the bond issue is the only way to achieve that goal.
