Abstract

Description of the burning of the abandoned farmhouse on Mackworth Island in Casco Bay, which once was the home of Dr. Robert E. Kelly, the former principal of the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf . According to a 1982 state attorney general's report, physical and sexual abuse were widespread at the facility, and deaf advocates remain outraged that no charges were filed against anybody involved. With details of the abuse, the Governor Baxter School Compensation Fund, and the satisfaction the victims and their families felt when the farmhouse was intentionally burned.
