Abstract

Article on the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W), which is accused of illegally spending public funds by joining in the fish-and-game lobby's campaign against the fall referendum to ban bear baiting. Officials deny that state personnel are working against the ballot measure, which is sponsored by Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting and its national funders, the Humane Society. Referendum supporters have sent a letter to Roland Martin, inland fisheries and wildlife commissioner, and Gov. John Baldacci's administration, asking them to stop state employees from working to defeat the referendum. With comments on the need to change the role of the IF&W, which many see as exclusively serving the interests of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine.
