Abstract

Article on the November statewide bear-baiting referendum, noting that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW), in defending bear baiting, is contradicting the ethical principles it advocates. Each year, IFW hands out thousands of copies of "Beyond Fair Chase: The Ethic and Tradition of Hunting," by Jim Posewitz. The book calls the practice of baiting into question. Cecil Gray, a Bingham guide associated with Maine Hunters for Fair Bear Hunting, considers baiting a violation of the ethical standard of respect for the prey.
