Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on New York developer John Cacoulidis, who erected a large "Bush Cheney '04" sign on his private island in Cumberland in July. Neighbors complained, arguing the sign violated a local ordinance prohibiting political signs that could be viewed from the public way, except within 30 days of an election. Town officials ruled the sign could stay since it could not, technically, be seen from a public way. Cacoulidis is known for a proposal to build twin 640-foot towers on the South Portland waterfront, and also for wanting to use his island for a liquefied natural gas terminal. With details on other political sign controversies in the state.
