Abstract

Article on HP 500, a proposal by Rep. Sean Faircloth, D-Bangor, to increase taxes on alcohol, tobacco and soda. Tom Hansen, owner of Meritage and Market Wines in Portland, supports the legislation, noting that the $91 million raised annually would preserve funding for early-intervention and child-safety programs targeted for cuts or elimination under Gov. John Baldacci's proposed 2006-07 budget. Hansen and his wife Karen Gervasoni have a special-needs child and know the importance of early-intervention programs. Faircloth's proposal also includes a seasonal increase in the meals-and-lodging tax and an increase in the income level at which the state's highest income-tax kicks in.
