Abstract

Article on AIDS in Maine, with a focus on the correlation between the use of the club drug crystal meth and the increase in unsafe sex among gay men. Sally Putnam, nurse coordinator for the AIDS Consultation Program at Maine Medical Center, said the threat of crystal meth-related new diagnoses is very disturbing. According to Putnam, sex parties organized around crystal meth and Viagra are becoming more prevalent in Portland. Even worse, some men are deliberately seeking to become infected by others who are HIV-positive. Noel Bonam, manager of the Health and Human Services Department for the city of Portland, says crystal meth use is leading to a spike in HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases. Details.
