Abstract

Article on the $450-million bonding portion of Governor John Baldacci's budget, with a focus on Republican efforts to secure a people's veto of the budget. Randy Bumps, chairman of the Maine Republican Party, criticized Democrats for borrowing against Maine's future to pay for current expenses. Democrats counter that the Republicans want to "tear down state government." Matt Tilley, co-chair of the Maine Greens, said the Green Party will take an official stance on the Republicans' attempt to veto the borrowing after May 1.
