Abstract

"this just in" piece on Logan Place, the state's only efficiency-style apartment building for the chronically homeless. Managed by Avesta Housing, the 30-unit building on Frederic Street in Portland opened on March 22. All residents suffer from physical or mental disabilities, and organizers say many struggle with mental illness or substance abuse. Curtis Haynes, a longtime counselor at Portland's Milestone Foundation shelter and detox program, questions how staff will support tenants who have long histories in detox centers. Jon Bradley of Preble Street Resource Center said case management and group counseling will be available, but no one is required to participate in these programs in order to stay.
