Abstract

Lengthy, detailed article alleging prisoner abuse and torture in the Special Management Unit (SMU), also known as the Supermax, at the new Maine State Prison in Warren. A videotape received by an anonymous source shows a violent "extraction" for disobedience into the Supermax, a 100-cell, maximum-security, solitary-confinement facility. Includes interviews with six SMU prisoners: Michael James, Deane Brown, Joseph Reeves, Norman Kehling, Michael Chasse, and Charles Limanni. Martin Magnusson, Maine's corrections commissioner, agrees that much needs to be changed with the Supermax, and vows reform. With comments by Joseph Steinberger, a Rockland attorney who has represented SMU inmates; and Carol Carothers, a leader of the Maine chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
