"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on the role of the Green party in Maine, noting that the party is strongest in the Greater Portland area. The party is contesting just 12 of the 186 seats in the state House and Senate, with 11 of those seats in Cumberland County. State Green officials have devoted themselves to getting gubernatorial candidate Pat LaMarche on the ballot and helping her qualify for public campaign financing. The Greens need to win at least 5 percent of the governor's vote to remain an official party. Rep. John Eder, Green-Portland, disagrees with the state party's focus on the gubernatorial race.
