Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the Portland Press Herald (PPH), its executive editor Jeanine Guttman, and a news story that broke on Fox 51 television news on Nov. 2, reporting that presidential candidate George W. Bush had been arrested and convicted in Kennebunkport in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. News reporter Ted Cohen of the PPH's York County bureau learned of the arrest in mid-July, but his editor deemed it too old to be relevant. With details about other hard news stories uncovered by PPH reporters that were held for months and, in at least once instance, four years.
