Abstract

Article on the "moving art show" held in Portland last Friday to protest the removal of a controversial art show from the University of Southern Maine. The night was supposed to have been the opening reception of the show "Can't Jail the Spirit: Art by Political Prisoner Thomas Manning and Others." The protestors marched to Congress Square where speeches were given by author Carolyn Chute, Lynn Williams of the National Lawyers Guild, and Jonah Fertig, a Portland Victory Gardens Project organizer. Counter-protestors included teamsters from a union representing about 600 Maine police officers.
