"This Just In" piece reporting that members of the Portland Victory Garden Project believe the cancellation by the University of Southern Maine (USM) of the art exhibit "Can't Jail the Spirit: Art by Political Prisoner Tom Manning and Others," actually served to give the show a larger audience. Frank Turek, owner of Ubu Studio in Portland, says publicity about the controversy contributed to large crowds at his gallery for the reopening of the show on October 6. A symposium on political repression and subversive art, originally scheduled at USM in conjunction with the cancelled show, is slated for this week. A second USM symposium to specifically deal with the Manning show will be presented in mid-November.
