Abstract

"This Just In" piece on Portland native Eva Kaplan, 26, who has been living in Busia, Kenya for part of the past year. She has been working with MIT's Poverty Action Lab, using scientific research to improve poverty-fighting efforts around the world. Kaplan's job is to track the AIDS epidemic spreading through the population, and now infecting about half of the people in the region. As a related project, Kaplan is working on developing the community's first library. Kaplan's mother, Molly Chancey, is coordinating local efforts to ship books to the area.
