Abstract

"This Just In" piece on the planned restoration of Portland's Abyssinian Church. Leonard Cummings, chairman of the Committee to Restore the Abyssinian (CRA), said the group recently finished an interior demolition and conservation, and has put the building on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1827, the Newbury Street church is the third-oldest black meetinghouse in the United States and was one of only a handful of schools for black children.
