Abstract

"This Just In" piece on Sen. Beth Edmonds, D-Freeport and Senate president, noting that Edmond's last-minute vote switch on tax-reform bill LD 1925 is what killed the bill. Sen. John Nutting, D-Leeds, expressed disappointment that Edmonds did the bidding of Gov. John Baldacci, who opposed the bill. LD 1925 would have spread out the sales tax onto many services, financing a drop in the income tax from a top rate of 8.5 percent to a "flat" 6.25 percent for all taxpayers. The bill's conservative detractors said they wanted to have cuts in government spending accompany tax reform.
