Abstract

"This Just In" piece on the state's Freedom of Access Act, with a focus on an upcoming appeal to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court relating to the 1989 conviction of Dennis Dechaine for the rape and murder of 12-year-old Sarah Cherry. Steven Rowe, attorney general, appointed a three-man commission to investigate allegations from James Moore and others, of police and prosecutorial misconduct in the case. A July ruling said the the commission can keep its records secret because it was not a government body engaged in government business. If upheld, the ruling would allow Rowe and others to "outsource" official business to "independent" groups in certainty the the group's actions will never become public. The Maine Civil Liberties Union is supporting the appeal.
