Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine's new independent filmmakers. In the past, the only independent movies made by Maine filmmakers were documentaries. But in the last couple of years, a handful of production companies that make fiction films have appeared in Portland and elsewhere in the state, including Newborn Pictures, Flamingo Productions and Honey Tree Films. Some Maine filmmakers are getting around Hollywood, the major distribution gatekeeper, by distributing their movies over the Internet. With related articles about new and noteworthy Maine releases, including "Pennyweight," "The Ballad of Ida and Doob," "Willoughby," and "Tangible Fathers."
