"nXt: The Next Generation" piece with a profile of Stella Lado, 18, a Sudanese refugee who moved to Portland three years ago. This week, she will represent Portland High School in Washington, D. C., at the Congressional Youth Leadership Council's National Young Leaders Conference. A senior, she is president of the school's international club, a member of the civil rights team, an athlete, a dancer, and a mentor to youth. She leads the Sudanese dance troupe in the international club's annual Cultural Heritage Show and invites children to her home in Kennedy Park to teach them Sudanese dancing. On weekends Lado works at El Mirador Mexican in the Portland Public Market, and she also braids hair.
