"this just in" piece on the race for Cumberland County Register of Deeds. Incumbent John O'Brien, who took office in 1993, uses Affiliated Computer Services for its database management and document archiving. Challenger John Simpson wants to put all of the office's information online, using his own company, MacImage, which provided similar services to Hancock County's register of deeds several years ago. The register's office has 17,649 books full of mortgages, contracts, deeds, liens, and mapping plans, and each book is about 350 pages. That's roughly 6.2 million pages, with more being added every week.
