Abstract

"this just in" piece on a federal pollution-reducing initiative that the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and three marine trade associations have signed on to. The objective is a cleaner-burning marine engine. There are more than 125,000 boats registered in Maine and the standard two-stroke motorboat engine dumps 30 percent of its fuel directly into the water and air, polluting our natural resources with MTBE, benzene, and other toxic chemicals. The goal of the initiative this year is for marine retailers in Maine to make clean engines 75 percent of their sales. By 2006, manufacturers won't be allowed to make the old-style motors any longer.
