Abstract

"this just in" piece on a zoning change approved by the Portland City Council that will sacrifice waterfront views in favor of boosting the local economy. The Gulf of Maine Aquarium, a nonprofit group, successfully petitioned the city council to relax waterfront zoning restrictions so the group can build a 50-foot, three-story marine research facility on Portland's waterfront. Before the council's vote on July 15, zoning laws capped the height of structures in the waterfront district at 35 feet.
