"Cover Story" piece on efforts to develop a street culture in Portland to attract both tourists and year-round Maine residents to the city. Rena Masten of Portland's Downtown District this summer organized the Fleet's Alive at Five Outdoor Music Series, which brought thousands of people into the city's Monument Square. With special focus on Michael Lane Trautman, a vaudeville-type performer, and Laura Sullivan, who plays Celtic-sounding tunes on a recorder. Both Trautman and Sullivan are street performers.
