Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Employment 1, a for-profit company based in Portland that charges clients $160 to access its job database. Contrary to an employee's sales pitch, the company's subscription agreement clearly states that it does not guarantee anything, including either express or implied specific placement, and that it is not an employment agency and doesn't secure jobs for clients. Perhaps less than a third of the 200 jobs posted on the company's computer database are located in or near Portland. Most jobs list a starting pay of $8 to $10 per hour, depending on experience.
