Abstract

"Gazette" piece on former winter holiday traditions in Maine. From 1954 to 1958 The Icemanship Society of Maine was an informal hockey league playing on a pond at the Cape Elizabeth home of Bette Davis and Gary Merrill. Matinee double features at the State Theater were another tradition, as was the Winter Carnival on the Western Promenade. On Peaks Island, performances were held at the Gem Theater featuring performers from New York.
