The still-extant and now co-ed Portland Rossini Club, the oldest private musical organization in the country, was incorporated in 1871 and originally designed to bring young ladies into society. The club's monthly concerts were once the pinnacle of Portland's cultural life. Last year, composer Robert Gans became president of the club, which now holds concerts at Trinity Episcopal Church.
