Abstract

Profile of venerable Portland bookseller Francis O'Brien, who was born in 1908 and died 10 years ago. He joined the Merchant Marine at 16, became a leftist, and served as the union representative for the Portland shipyard. His bookstore became the hub of Maine's small Communist Party. During the 50s, he was actively investigated by the FBI, says his son, Portland lawyer Murrough O'Brien. Later in life, Bowdoin College recognized his value as an antiquarian with an honorary doctorate.
