Abstract

NAFTA--the North American Free Trade Agreement--has influenced the use of signage in Spanish in big box stores. Reputedly 40 percent of Maine's population is French in heritage, culture, and language. Even near the bilingual Canadian border, big box stores display signs in Spanish.
