Abstract

Colonel Oliver Hazard Payne, a partner in Standard Oil, commissioned Bath Iron Works to build the luxurious 300-foot "Aphrodite," the largest steam yacht ever built in the U.S. The ship was designed by Sanford White of McKim, Mead and White and finished in 1898. In 1917, Payne lent his yacht to the U.S. Navy for the war effort, but did not live to see her return.
