Abstract

The State Theatre in Portland was restored and reopened in fits and starts between 1994-2006, but because of fire code and other issues, it has been closed ever since. The author investigates the theater's past, present, and future, interviewing city officials and others connected with the venue. Blame for the historic building's closure is placed on city inspectors' inconsistent demands, owners who should have fixed existing problems, and current unreasonable lease conditions.
