Abstract

Along the coast of Maine, "smart homes" are beginning to include microchip features, like scanners to identify the owner's car as it arrives, automatic hot tubs, and self-sealing refrigerator doors. Only 20 percent of Steve Hayes and L. Kenney Smith's related business at Custom Electronics in West Gardiner originated in Maine until last year, but, with the opening of the Portland Design Center and the Portland Symphony Show Home in Falmouth, now they're as busy as they can be.
