Abstract

Pierce Atwood, Portland's largest law firm, has recently moved into new office space on the top four floors of the former Cumberland Cold Storage building, located at 254 Commercial Street on Merrill's Wharf. The firm and several other non-marine businesses were permitted to become tenants due to waterfront zoning changes made by the Portland City Council in 2010 that require only 55% of the first floor of waterfront buildings to be dedicated to marine businesses. Originally constructed for the Twitchell-Champlin Company in 1900, the 117,600 square foot building was later used for Cumberland Cold Storage starting in 1962 and Cumberland Self Storage beginning in 1986.
