Abstract

An article highlighting some of the challenges associated with marketing Maine lobster. Although lobster has recently gained international popularity in places such as China, most of the live Maine lobster shipped out of the country goes through Logan Airport and arrives in other countries with the label "Boston lobster". In the past, a "Certified Maine Lobster" banding project was attempted but was not comprehensive and was complicated by the many different stops between the lobsterman and a lobster's final destination. A new version of tagging that may gain popularity is a barcode that can be put on a lobster's knuckle and is readable by smart phones.
