Abstract

In 1961, Westbrook College president Edward Blewitt bought the Georgetown, Maine, home of sculptor Gaston Lachaise, which contained a sculpture of a nude female. Blewitt's attempts to give or sell it to the Portland Museum of Art were met with widespread criticism from a conservative public. History of Lachaise.
