Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on some of the reasons why Maine is called "Extreme." With special focus on Phineas "Mak" Sprague, 18, and Brad Burke, 17, both of Cape Elizabeth, who crossed the Atlantic Ocean aboard the 163-foot Roald Amundsen from Cadiz, Spain, as a senior project; Nanci Boutet, 43, of Old Orchard Beach, a semi-professional volleyball player and surfer; and Virginia Rutter, 71, of Portland, who participated in the annual Peaks to Portland swim three years in a row as the second oldest participant and winner among her age group all three years.
