Abstract
Article on Cape Island in Southport, the island getaway home for Margaret Hamilton (1911-1985), the actress best known as the Wicked Witch of the West on "The Wizard of Oz." Hamilton Meserve, 69, son of the actress, said that in 1961 his mother was performing summer stock in Brunswick when she heard the Coast Guard was selling lighthouses. She and Meserve went in together and purchased the island. Hamilton, who appeared in other film and television roles, would arrive in Maine in the spring and sometimes stay deep into the fall.
