Abstract

Article on painting Maine seascapes, with a focus on the historical works of Charles H. Woodbury, Winslow Homer, John Marin and Marsden Hartley. Four contemporary Maine artists are among those carrying on the tradition. Alan Fishman, 62, has been a Belfast resident since 1997 and uses Penobscot Bay as inspiration for his acrylic paintings. Nancy Wissemann-Widrig, 75, paints from studios in New York and in Cushing. Born in Bangor in 1951, Eric Hopkins grew up on North Haven Island and returned to live there and paint. Hopkins is best known for his aerial views featuring deep blues and greens. Dennis Pinette, 53, settled in Belfast 20 years ago and says he tries to avoid cliched images when painting the ocean.
