Abstract

"Longfellow: A Rediscovered Life," by Charles C. Calhoun, is an indicator of the renewed interest in Portland native, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), an icon in his time. Many modernist critics have dismissed him as moralizing and sentimental, but Calhoun contends that the poet "created and disseminated much of what we think of as Victorian American culture" and helped establish New England's "cultural hegemony" in relation to the rest of the country. With biographical details.
