Abstract

Piece about the flurry of activity in Portland involving the construction of new hotels and the expansion of older hotels like the former Eastland. The former headquarters of the Portland Press Herald is slated to become a high end boutique hotel while a Hyatt Place Hotel is rising on the corner of Fore and Union Streets and a Courtyard by Marriott is under construction on the west end of Commercial Street. All this development activity reflects Portland’s popularity as a tourist destination, although some question whether or not the city can sustain the number of hotel rooms that will be available. With sidebars discussing hotel development in other cities and towns such as Biddeford, Windham, and Old Orchard Beach.
