Abstract

Piece about the Old Orchard Beach Pier, the longest steel pier in the world at the time of its construction in 1898. The Pier Casino Ballroom attracted stars such as Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday. African American performers and visitors found a welcome at a guest house nicknamed “110.” The hotel’s registry was recently acquired by the Sampson Center for Diversity at the Glickman Library of the University of Southern Maine. The article also takes a brief look at the Pier today and what it means for downtown OOB.
