Abstract

Canadian custom officials have returned a $1,400 diamond engagement ring to Mickey Smith, 21, of Gardiner. The ring was seized when Smith attempted to cross the border without declaring the ring, which he intended to give to his girlfriend, Alison Tweed, when they arrived at her home near St. John. Officials at first insisted that Smith pay $500 in fines and taxes for the return of the ring, but had a change of heart because of the bad publicity surrounding the episode. Yesterday, Tweed accepted Smith's proposal.
